Despite some ups and downs, the ties between the two countries have been growing so much so that the bilateral trade has grown from US$300 million to practically one hundred billion, while the two-way investment stock has gone from nothing to US$50 billion.
The trade between China & UK has reached a new high last year. British businesses have actively participated in Chinese reform and opening-up. Consequently, London has emerged as the world’s leading offshore RMB trading epicenter.
Along these lines, the two countries have strengthened coordination as well as collaboration on issues like multinational development and climate change. Moreover, the two have actively contributed to handling shared challenges encountering humanity.
During the phone call, President Xi also pointed out the need for the two sides to take a strategic and long-term outlook, increase dialogue and engagement, keep an open and inclusive perspective, uphold reciprocal respect, and expand the mutually advantageous partnerships.
In the same vein, he proclaimed China’s direct, open and inclusive philosophy toward dialogue and collaboration with the UK. He called on the UK to regard China and China-UK ties in an objective and unbiased light to work with China.
Whilst Prime Minister Johnson on his part noted the significance of UK-China ties. He stated that the UK is proud that the trade between the two countries has developed rapidly and there are more Chinese scholars in the UK than any other European country.
Both China and UK are permanent members of the UN Security Council therefore the two can work together. The Prime Minister of the UK expressed his country’s readiness to engage in open dialogue with China.
He also urged to broaden cooperation on trade and economy, increase exchanges and cooperation, deepen communication and coordination on climate change, biodiversity, and other global and regional issues.
The two also exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. President Xi articulated China’s principled position. He stressed the necessity for the global community to make sincere efforts to promote peace talks.
Likewise, he urged to create conditions for a political settlement of the Ukraine issue, along with facilitating an early return of peace in Ukraine. He also conveyed China’s readiness to play a persistent, productive role to this end.
