Chinese Foreign Minister meets with Argentine counterpart in Rome

Rome, 1 November 2021 (TDI): The Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero on the sidelines of Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Rome, Italy.

Bilateral Relations

Wang Yi stated that the two countries are strong strategic partners. China and Argentina have strengthened their cooperation in space, nuclear energy, and in people to people contacts. The two countries enjoy over 50 years of diplomatic relations. The two sides respect mutually each other. China and Argentina have supported each other in global affairs. The traditional friends have strengthened their relations by enhancing cooperation in the Coronavirus pandemic. They will celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2022.

The Chinese Foreign Minister said that China is grateful for Argentina’s support for the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Therefore, China looks forward to working with Argentina under the framework of the BRI. He further stated that both sides should enhance cooperation in the fields of finance, energy, aerospace, and the Antarctic Ocean. He assured his Argentine counterpart that China will continue to provide vaccines and other medical supplies to Argentina. The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that China will never leave alone its friends in times of difficulty.

Emphasis on Multilateralism

Wang Yi also emphasized multilateralism by saying that China and Argentina both are firm believers of cooperation. He said that China will collaborate with Argentina in multilateralism organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and G20. He also appreciated Argentina’s decision to actively part in the Global Development Initiative.

Argentine Foreign Minister expressed gratitude

The Argentine Foreign Minister mentioned that the two countries enjoy a history of friendly relations. He expressed gratitude for China to protect and safeguard the territorial sovereignty and integrity of Argentina. He also thanked China for providing continuous assistance against the Coronavirus pandemic.

50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

The Argentine Foreign Minister assured his support for the one-China policy. He said that Argentina is looking to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations by enhancing cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, finance and water conservation. He further stated that Argentina emphasizes the importance of the BRI project and is willing to work with China on this historical project. The two counterparts also discussed the issues of mutual concern to strengthen their bilateral relations.
The people’s Republic of China and the Argentine Republic established diplomatic relations in 1972. The two countries enjoy close and friendly relations. China has become the second-largest trading partner of Argentina which has strengthened their relations. Chinese investments have multiplied in Argentina in just some years. The two countries trust each other. Their bilateral cooperation is growing in all fields. They will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the development of diplomatic relations the next year.
