Chinese, Djiboutian Presidents Elevate Relations

Beijing, 2 September 2024 (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh in Beijing during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

During the meeting, the two leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

President Xi praised President Guelleh for his consistent participation in all FOCAC summits since its inception.

He emphasized the exemplary role that China and Djibouti play in South-South cooperation.

Xi also expressed China’s readiness to support Djibouti in operating key projects such as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway and the Djibouti International Free Trade Zone, aiming to transform the country into a regional trade and logistics hub.

China’s Commitment to Support Djibouti

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Djibouti in contributing to peace and development in the Horn of Africa and across the continent.

President Guelleh reiterated Djibouti’s commitment to advancing key projects like the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway and deepening practical cooperation with China in various sectors.

He expressed a desire to enhance communication and collaboration with China for regional security and development.

During the summit, both countries are expected to sign agreements to further cooperation in areas including economy, trade, development, and aerospace.
