China responds on Australian boycott of Beijing Olympics

Beijing, 8 December 2021 (TDI): China has condemned the Australian diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

Following the United States, the Australian government has also announced the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics. The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin in today’s Chinese Foreign Ministry regular press conference condemned the Australian decision.

Wang stated that Australia should not politicize sports. He stressed that sports should not be a platform for political goals. He highlighted that China has not invited Australian officials to the Beijing Winter Olympics. Therefore, it does not affect whether Australia comes or not. He said that the Australian stunt of boycotting the Beijing Olympics will not affect the success of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson pointed out that the Australian boycott of the Beijing Olympics clearly violated the principle of political neutrality enacted in the Olympic Charter. He stated that the Australian boycott runs counter to the Olympic motto of “together.” In fact, Australia stands on the opposite side of global athletes and sports fans.

Wang said that China strongly denounces the Australian diplomatic boycott. He pointed out that Australia should not blindly follow a certain country in wrongdoing.

International Olympic Committee appreciated Chinese efforts for Winter Olympics

He highlighted that International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appreciated the efforts of China for the success of the Beijing Olympics. Wang also pointed out the resolution adopted by the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Olympic Truce for the Beijing Winter Games. He underlined that it was co-sponsored by 173 countries which shows that the world rejects propaganda by certain countries against the Beijing Olympics.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson stated that the international community supports the Beijing Olympics. Therefore, no one should try to hurt the image of the Beijing Olympics by their unilateral actions. The world will see the success of the Beijing Olympics, he added.

Noted that, Beijing Olympics are the winter games which will start in February 2022 in the Chinese capital Beijing. China has been preparing for months for this event. Athletes from all over the world will participate in these games to represent their countries.
