China opposes US invitation of Summit for Democracy to Taiwan

Beijing, 25 November 2021 (TDI): China has condemned the U.S. invitation to Taiwanese authorities for participating in the Summit for Democracy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian stated that China firmly opposes the invitation to the Taiwanese authorities by the United States for participation in the so-called Summit for Democracy.

Joe Biden, the President of the United States will host the Summit for Democracy virtually from 9 December to 10 December 2021. The United States has invited over 110 countries for the Summit including Taiwan. China condemned this decision of the United States of inviting Taiwan as it clearly violates its One-China policy.

He stressed that there is only one China in the world and the People’s Republic of China’s government is the sole representative of the whole of China in the world. Taiwan is part of China and the Chinese government has legal binding on Taiwan.

The US should be sincere in its commitment to the On-China principle

He further pointed out that the international community recognizes the One-China principle. Therefore, the United States should abide by this principle.

Zhao urged the United States to not use Taiwan for its geo-strategic interests. It should not use Summit on Democracy to advance its geostrategic interests, he added. He said that the United States is trying to provoke a confrontation by following its Cold War mentality.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson stated that those who are helping Taiwan Independence forces are doing nothing but playing with the fire. They will burn themselves by playing with the Taiwan Independence fire, he added.

China urged the United States to follow the stipulations of the three China-US Joint Communiques. Zhao stressed that the U.S. should not provide any platform to the Independence forces of Taiwan by following the One-China principle.

Earlier this month in the video meeting of the Presidents of China and the U.S., Joe Biden, the President of the United States assured his Chinese counterpart of the American commitment to the One-China policy. China declares the U.S. invitation to the Taiwanese authorities for the Summit for Democracy as a violation of the One-China principle.
