Beijing, 13 January 2022 (TDI): During the regular press conference of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Ministry’s spokesperson stated that China is always opposed to any unilateral sanctions and so-called long-arm jurisdiction by any country on other countries based on domestic law.

The comments were made in response to a question concerning the new sanctions against North Korea (DPRK) by the US. He further enunciated that willful sanctions do not help resolve the issue of the Korean Peninsula. However, they only worsen the confrontational mood.

He reiterated that China is optimistic that the relevant parties will act and speak with prudence. Furthermore, China expects all parties to adhere to the right direction of consultation and dialogue. In addition, measures must be taken to help stabilize the situation.

Recently, North Korea conducted two successive missile tests. Last year also the country test-fired a Submarine-launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) and a hypersonic missile.

The United States (US) has imposed sanctions on five North Korean officials in response to the latest ballistic missile test by North Korea. Later it also announced that it will seek new UN sanctions for the country as well.

The Treasury Department of the US announced that it will impose penalties on the five officials over their roles in acquiring technology and equipment for the missile programs of North Korea.

China is not in the favor of such sanctions as it adheres to the policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Moreover, a peaceful resolution of the conflict is the wayforward.
