# China and Japan affirm strengthening bilateral ties

Tokyo, 13 September 2022 (TDI): China and Japan highlighted strengthening bilateral ties in a seminar on Monday. The seminar was conducted on the 50th anniversary of the**
normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations.

The Seminar was held under the theme “remain true to the original intention and open up the future.” It was organized by the Chinese Embassy in Japan and the Japan Business Federation.

The seminar was co-sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and seven Japan-china friendship groups.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a [video speech](http://jp.china-embassy.gov.cn/jpn/zrdt_1/202209/t20220913_10765381.htm) at the opening ceremony of the seminar. In the message, he highlighted that good friendship between China and Japan is necessary for the revitalization of Asia.

Correspondingly, he put forward five-point views on building China-Japan relations that will

help both countries tighten their bilateral relations.

Within this, Minister Wang said both sides should promote bilateral ties to higher and wider

platform to break new ground for new China-Japan relations.

Resoundingly, the Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi sent a video speech on

the occasion.

In his video message, the Foreign Minister said that both sides have strengthened their bilateral relations over the last 50 years. Moreover, he said emphasized focusing on the next 50 years and working together to build constructive and stable Japan-China relations.

##### Wang Yi’s five points**

In the video message, the Foreign Minister of china said that firstly both sides should ensure the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations.

In this regard, the Minister pointed out that the four political documents reached between the two countries must be abided by and the commitments that have been made so far should be honored.

The Foreign Minister warned that there should be no ambiguity or backsliding on major issues like that of Taiwan.

Secondly, Minister Wang said that both states need to bear in mind the overall situation and grasp the right direction of development. He said that both sides should abide by the political consensus as cooperative partners and not pose a threat to each other.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized that both countries should properly handle differences to ensure good relations.

Thirdly, the Foreign Minister emphasized deepening cooperation and achieving win-win

results at a higher level.

He highlighted that a strong sense of partnership will help in maintaining stable and smooth global industrial and supply chains, as well as fair and open trade and investment environment.

Fourthly, minister Wang advised fostering positive mutual understanding. He said that

people-to-people exchanges between China and Japan have a long history that can grow stronger in the future.

Lastly, the Foreign Minister concluded with the message that both states should practice genuine multilateralism.

He said that it is necessary to uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, jointly oppose zero-sum games and camp confrontation and promote regional stability and integrated development.

##### China-Japan Bilateral Relations**

China and Japan are the dominant regional powers in East Asia. Both countries have developed into the largest economies in the world.

Both countries share close economic relations, as well as people-to-people and cultural**
exchanges. Additionally, as important strategic partners, both countries value their friendship and look for opportunities to further tighten these relations.

In 2021, it was estimated that about 107,715 Japanese and 745,411 Chinese reside in both countries.

Moreover, Japan’s exports and imports to china are estimated to lie within $206.2billion and

$165.9billion respectively.
