Bucharest, 29 August 2023 (TDI): The Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren met with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu yesterday.

Moreover, both countries deliberate upon the primary elements of bilateral relations and highlight that the year 2025 will signify the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Chilean foreign minister said, “The bilateral relationship has seen significant growth”. The minister arrived in Budapest to be the main speaker at the Romanian annual diplomatic meeting.

This event will take place on August 30, 2023, in which all the country’s ambassadors will be present.

Klaveren claimed his role in the meeting as an honor for him and it indicates the strong relationship between the two countries.

The Secretary of State underscored a significant historical aspect of the bilateral relationship, recounting the consular protection efforts undertaken in Romania by the Chilean diplomat Samuel del Campo during World War II.

He also thanked Romania for the generosity offered to Chileans during the Chile military coup in 1973.

Furthermore, Van Klaveren emphasized that both countries are members of the UN Human Rights Council so it was a given for both of them to discuss human rights in the meeting.

With the presence of the Chilean ambassador to Romania Pia Busta, both state’s representatives highlighted the significance of multilateralism for peace promotion.
