Chile Calls for High Seas MPA to address the Climate Crisis

-

Santiago, 31 August 2021 (TDI):  As Negotiations on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement resumed this week after talks were discontinued due to COVID-19, Chile is taking additional measures to meet the UN’s ’30by30′ goal.

The Foreign Ministry of Chile on Friday underscored Chile’s ongoing effort on drafting a binding treaty among nations on high seas. This under negotiation treaty on high seas seeks to bind states to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030 to combat Climate Change.
Chile is among those committed Countries that have 43% of EEZ protected under MPA.  Now, under its President Sebastián Piñera, Chile has launched an endeavor to create a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in high seas in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
