CEDAW session underway in the United Nations

Geneva, 26 October 2021 (TDI): The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is holding its session. The Committee sessions started on 18 October and will end on 12 November.

The CEDAW is in charge of monitoring, the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. It consists of 23 experts on women’s rights all around the world.

In this session, the Committee is reviewing the situations in 10 countries. Those 10 countries are the Maldives, then Yemen, Egypt, Indonesia, Ecuador, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Sweden, and also South Sudan. They are also among the 189 countries that are parties to the Convention.

The countries need to ensure the full development and also advance of women. This has the purpose of guaranteeing the women, and also girls, the exercise of human rights; and fundamental freedoms. One of its bases is equality with men. The countries also need to undergo regular reviews of the Committee.

The Committee has received reports of the countries, and also from non-governmental organizations. Then it will hold a public meeting to review the situation of women’s rights and gender equality in those 10 countries. The Committee then formulates general recommendations, and also suggestions to the States.

MEETING ON THE SITUATION OF EGYPT

Today the Committee will discuss Egypt’s situation. The country that delivered its national report. In it, Egypt mentions its advances on its commitment towards the Convention. One of them is that presence of women in senior management positions then increased. Also, women’s participation in politics increased.

The African Women Rights Advocated, partnered up with the Five Foundation, DAWN MENA, Equality Now, Nazraand Global Media Campaign. They urged the Egyptian Government to commit to promoting women’s rights then.
