Phnom Penh, 7 October 2022 (TDI): Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, remarked that Cambodia will continue to increase its national spending in order to fight against climate change.
A target has been set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 42% by 2030.
On Thursday, through video recording, the Prime Minister addressed the international inter-party conference under the theme “Ecological Policy and Sustainable Development.”
Prime Minister Hun Sen said that as the world is facing numerous issues, all political parties must play a significant share in enhancing environmental stability and sustainable growth. And they must ensure the development of life, health, and prosperity of the people of the world.
On one hand, the Kingdom of Cambodia under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party has constantly adopted and executed severe reforms by developing and enhancing regulatory frameworks after securing total peace and stability through a win-win policy.
On the other hand, national policies and strategies have aimed to protect the environment, safeguard natural resources and biodiversity, and promote stable and resilient livelihoods for the local population while also promoting the development of physical infrastructure, human resources, and socioeconomic growth.
Owing to high economic growth, in 2015, Cambodia moved into the lower middle-income country category. It hopes to reach the upper middle-income country category by 2030. According to the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities, Cambodia has also constantly promoted its contributions to tackling global environmental concerns, particularly climate change.
Though it is a small nation with minimal greenhouse gas emissions, Cambodia is still committed to taking part in the fight against climate change.
It has tripled the national budget for climate change mitigation activities and has set a goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said, Cambodia also approved the Long-term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality to support a green economy with low carbon emissions that is climate resilient.
Since environmental problems transcend national borders, the only way to successfully address these concerns and protect our planet from disasters is through international cooperation and solidarity.
