Last month, the EU, Britain, and Italy called upon Russia to commit itself to net zero emissions by 2050 and upgrade its plans to proactively address climate change.

Moreover, they stressed that Russia should make use of the opportunity presented by the COP26 summit and scale up its efforts to reach net-zero.

Russia is one of the biggest producers of hydrocarbons, which are a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions that are responsible for worsening the climate crisis. It is also regarded as the biggest polluter in the world that has not yet tried to set a net-zero target.

Therefore, it has come under direct pressure from the international community for stepping up its efforts to reduce emissions ahead of the United Nations COP26 summit which is expected from Oct.
