Blinken Held High-Level Meetings on Ethiopia

-

Washington, 14 October 2021 (TDI): On Tuesday, US State Secretary Antony Blinken participated in the high-level meetings on Ethiopia, in collaboration with officials from the European Union, African Union, Sudan, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The representatives collectively urged the Ethiopian conflicting parties to comply with the international law and agree to a ceasefire.

During the high-level dialogue, Secretary Blinken shared his concerns over Ethiopia’s situation with the African Union High Representative, Olusegun Obasanjo. Jeffrey Feltman, the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, and Abdalla Hamdok, Sudan’s President and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), also participated in the meeting.

Other dignitaries included EU’s High Representative Joseph Borrell, United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss, French Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Frederic Clavier, and German Minister of the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen. The officials urged Ethiopia’s disputing parties to hold an inclusive dialogue and restore peace in the country. In addition, they discussed the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to vulnerable individuals.

Last year in November, a conflict emerged in Ethiopia’s northern region, Tigray, between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the federal forces. Since then, more than two million people have fled their homes and thousands have been killed amid the disputes.
