Biden’s Remarks on the ANZUS Treaty’s 70th anniversary

-

Washington, 1 September 2021 (TDI):  Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the nations, U.S. President Joe Biden said that the 70th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty, signed between Australia, the US, and New Zealand, was a major milestone and is as vital at present as it’s ever been, safeguarding the safety and prosperity of America and Australia.

Joe Biden complimented Australia and the United States efforts for the unmatched alliance. Especially, he praised Australians for standing with the United States in every conflict for more than a century. President Biden stated that the US will never forget Australia’s assistance for US defense operations after the September 11 attacks in the US in 2001, which triggered the treaty’s mutual defense articles for the first and only time. Also, he stated that the United States reaffirms its commitment to advance shared ideals, democratic standards, global security, and prosperity for the next 70 years and beyond on this anniversary.

President Biden and Prime Minister Scott Morrison are scheduled to conduct wide-ranging discussions in the coming days after the rapid departure of American and Australian soldiers and officials from Afghanistan. They also reiterated their commitment to building the fabric of peace between their two countries.

Australia, New Zealand, and United States Security Treaty (ANZUS) was formed in 1951 to safeguard the Pacific; however, New Zealand and the United States no longer maintain the security connection. Both coordinate with Australia in defense sectors separately.
