Colombo, 8 September 2021 (TDI): Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Tareq Ariful Islam met with the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Gamini Lakshman Peiris.

The two officials shed light on the diplomatic ties between Maldives and Bangladesh. Their focus was to discuss cooperation in terms of trade, investment, shipping, tourism, education, pharmaceuticals, and counter-terrorism. Both sides hoped for a better and stable world where they could cooperate peacefully.

Bangladesh was recognized by the Maldives on April 12, 1972. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1978, and the High Commission was formed in 1998. In 2008, the Maldives established a High Commission in Bangladesh. The High Commission in Dhaka, on the other hand, was shuttered in April 2014 and reopened in October 2015.

The two countries’ bilateral relations have steadily improved over time. A variety of agreements in the fields of culture, education, health, sports, visa waivers, and air services have been struck.
