Dhaka, 16 August (TDI): Bangladesh is considering to ask India for extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as she faces murder cases.
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to New Delhi last week after violent protests against her rule led to over 300 deaths, including students in large numbers.
Bangladesh’s de-facto foreign minister Mohammad Touhid Hossain in a recent interview said that he did not want to speculate about the issue but surely the ex-PM was facing many cases. He added that if the home and law ministries of Bangladesh decide to bring her back, we have to ask for her extradition.
The foreign minister further said that the request for Hasin’s extradition will create an embarrassing situation for India and India will have to take care of it. The Indian foreign minister has so far not responded to the statement.
The ex-Bangladesh strong woman has been named in two murder cases along with senior members of her cabinet. According to Ataur Rahman, deputy director of the investigation cell of International Crimes Tribunal, a domestic court, the tribunal had initiated a third case against 100 people including Hasina for torture, murder, and genocide during the unrest.
Three former ministers and advisers have already been taken into custody. The former prime minister in a statement has asked for a probe into the killings and vandalism during the protests.
