# Bangladesh, India to Enhance Intelligence Sharing and Border Patrols

**Dhaka (TDI):** Bangladesh and India have agreed to strengthen cooperation along their shared border through enhanced intelligence sharing and coordinated patrols, according to a joint statement issued on Friday. The move comes amid rising tensions over allegations of undocumented migration.

Dhaka has accused Indian authorities of attempting to push migrants across the border without following proper legal procedures, an issue that has further strained relations following the 2024 removal of Sheikh Hasina from office and India’s ongoing drive to identify and deport undocumented migrants.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) described their recent discussions as “cordial, positive and forward-looking,” according to the statement released after a four-day meeting of senior border officials in New Delhi. The talks also addressed concerns over “illegal, inadvertent and forcible crossing at border areas,” which has become an increasingly sensitive issue in recent months.

Bangladesh and India share a border stretching more than 4,000 kilometres (around 2,500 miles), making it one of the longest international boundaries in the world. India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs key border states including Tripura, West Bengal, and Assam, has prioritised action against alleged undocumented migration and has been attempting to push Bengali-speaking Muslims it labels as “illegal infiltrators” back into Bangladesh since last year.

Bangladesh says it has sent more than a dozen letters to New Delhi requesting an end to such practices. The BGB has reported that it has foiled several attempted crossings in recent weeks and has increased deployments, intelligence gathering, and drone surveillance along border areas.

Earlier this week, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, said that any push-ins without due process are “absolutely unacceptable” and warned that such actions could damage efforts to improve bilateral relations.

Bangladesh has also stepped up border patrols and awareness campaigns in affected areas, while India stated in May that it had asked Dhaka to verify the nationality of more than 2,860 individuals it suspects to be Bangladeshi nationals living in India without valid documentation.

The joint statement further noted that both sides discussed issues including human trafficking, border fatalities, smuggling, infrastructure development, and the implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan.

It added that both countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and calm along the border, and agreed to enhance coordinated patrols, improve real-time information sharing, increase vigilance, and strengthen joint efforts against cross-border criminal networks. The next meeting of senior border officials is scheduled to take place in Dhaka in November.
