-

Baku, 7 December 2021 (TDI): Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, and the United States (U.S)  Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Karen Donfried, held a telephonic conversation on 6 December.

CONTENTS OF THE CALL

Both sides discussed current happenings in the Eurasian region, touching particularly on the post-conflict relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Minister Bayramov and Donfried exchanged views on the delicate political situation, bringing up potential areas of negotiation. The common objective for both parties was to help Azerbaijan normalize diplomatic relations with Armenia.

Donfried, who is a foreign policy expert, highlighted the positive progress both Eurasian states have made so far in improving ties. She talked about Azerbaijan’s peaceful handover of 10 Armenian servicemen back to the Armenian side. Simultaneously, she also mentioned how Armenia had submitted mine maps to Azerbaijan. These actions signify a resolve to move towards normalizing bilateral relations.

During the telephone call, the two sides further spoke on some of the issues regarding the bilateral cooperation agenda. They both presented their own views and held constructive discourse on the matter. In addition, they also discussed other topics of mutual interest.

OVERVIEW OF AZERBAIJAN-US RELATIONS

The United States and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in 1992, following Azerbaijan’s independence from the Soviet Union. Since then, both countries have collaborated to fend off terrorism and transnational threats as well as expand bilateral trade and investment. Both sides also work to promote European energy security.

Azerbaijan-US flags merged into one another, symbolizing friendship.

America is particularly invested in helping Azerbaijan pursue an effective and sustainable political situation to the conflict with Armenia. It strongly supports finding a lasting answer to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group Co-Chairs. In effect, this will establish regional stability, peace, as well as prosperity.
