# APEC Economies Push for Freer Trade Ahead of Suzhou Ministerial

**Shanghai (TDI):** Trade officials from across the Asia-Pacific convened in Shanghai this week to set the agenda for a pivotal ministerial gathering, to maintain momentum on regional economic integration.

The APEC Committee on Trade and Investment met to advance work on regional trade and investment priorities ahead of the Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in Suzhou, scheduled for May 22–23.

Discussions focused on economic integration, supply chain resilience, digital trade, and reducing barriers to cross-border commerce.

With global trade under strain from geopolitical tensions and shifting tariff regimes, APEC’s 21 member economies face growing pressure to demonstrate that multilateral cooperation can still deliver results.

Committee Chair Julio Chan, who also serves as Peru’s APEC General Coordinator at its Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, framed the meetings as essential at a moment of economic uncertainty.

He said members must continue identifying areas of common interest and translating them into concrete initiatives that support a more connected, resilient, and inclusive Asia-Pacific region.

Chan indicated the committee’s priorities for the year include advancing the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific agenda, promoting the digitalization of trade processes, and strengthening cooperation across APEC forums.

Officials reviewed progress on efforts to advance economic integration in the region, including discussion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement.

As digital technologies increasingly shape trade and business activity, economies reviewed ongoing work related to digital trade rules, artificial intelligence, and cross-border digital cooperation.

Beyond high-level frameworks, officials addressed the nuts and bolts of trade facilitation; including customs digitalization, supply chain performance, investment facilitation, and transport and logistics connectivity.

The session also tackled issues of economic inclusion. Members discussed initiatives aimed at strengthening workforce participation, including work related to women’s economic empowerment, Indigenous businesses, and access to assistive technologies.

The APEC Business Advisory Council updated officials on recommendations from regional business leaders, including calls to reduce trade and logistics costs, strengthen infrastructure connectivity, and lower barriers affecting digital commerce and cross-border business activity.
