António Guterres urges companies to join ‘The Global Roadmap to Net-Zero Concrete’

-

New York, 14 October 2021 (TDI): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his recent tweet, has urged all cement companies to join in the initiative labeled The Global Roadmap to Net Zero Concrete which aims to bring together some of the world’s largest cement manufacturers to reduce their emissions intensity by up to 25%.

The cement industry is gearing towards achieving the net-zero vision for 2050.

Currently, the cement industry contributes around 7% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions. The global concrete demand is constantly rising in order to keep pace with growing urbanization. This is a ripe time for modern public infrastructure industries to make a low-carbon transition.

Moreover, the Global Roadmap to Net Zero Concrete is a part of the new 2030 commitments by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), signed by 40+ companies, which account for 80% of global cement production worldwide.

Furthermore, the GCCA aims to achieve its set targets by 2030 and 2050. The initiative is in line with the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015.

Despite the fact that increasing demand for cement and concrete makes it harder to reduce emissions, the scheme is set to make the transition to carbon-neutral products by 2050 by employing techniques of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.
