Baku, 5 August 2022 (TDI): Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, received the new Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan, Gurbanmammet Elyasov, as per the statement released by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

Turkmenistan’s Ambassador presented copies of his credentials to Foreign Minister Bayramov.

Azeri Foreign Minister congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment. The Foreign Minister also noted that the friendly and fraternal relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan had reached a new stage of development.

The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan also highlighted the importance of mutual high-level visits and the legal documents signed between the two countries in recent years.

Both sides emphasized the significance of the work regarding the approval of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.

Turkmenistan’s Ambassador conveyed the most sincere greetings of Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister, Rashid Meredov. The Ambassador also highly appreciated the current relations between the two countries. Ambassador Elyasov further noted the effectiveness and positive dynamics of interaction and partnership.

The Ambassador also expressed his satisfaction with relations between peoples of the two countries based on historical, ethical, and ethnic unity. Ambassador Elyasov noted the potential for further development of collaboration in different areas and stressed that he would make efforts in this regard.

During the meeting, issues were raised regarding regional cooperation between two states and mutual support in international organizations. Azeri Foreign Minister also wished Ambassador Elyasov success in his activities to develop Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan ties.

Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan Relations

The Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in June, 1992. Azerbaijan has an embassy in Ashgabat and Turkmenistan has an embassy in Baku, both embassies opened on the same date in 2002.

Turkmenistan’s President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, has officially visited Azerbaijan on a number of occasions. Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, has also visited Turkmenistan on three occasions, in 2008, 2018 and 2019.

Both countries cooperate in transport, logistics, agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals and tourism. The Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Humanitarian Cooperation has also been functioning between the two countries since 2008.
