Ambassador-designate of Cuba Assumes Charge, Presents Credentials to President Zardari

Islamabad (TDI): The Ambassador-designate of Cuba to Pakistan, Damian Cordero Torres, formally presented his credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari at a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his diplomatic tenure in the country.

The ceremony, held at the Presidency, saw ambassadors-designate from Cuba, Ethiopia, Portugal, Spain and Tanzania, along with the High Commissioner-designate of Singapore, present their diplomatic credentials.

The envoys were welcomed with a guard of honor upon arrival, followed by the playing of national anthems and a ceremonial parade before the formal presentation.

Congratulating the diplomats on the start of their assignments, President Zardari expressed confidence that their tenure would contribute to deepening engagement between Pakistan and their respective countries.

During the bilateral meeting with the Cuban envoy, President Zardari extended a warm welcome and conveyed his best wishes for a successful tenure in Pakistan. He emphasized the longstanding friendly relations between Pakistan and Cuba, rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and shared positions on various international issues.

The President noted that both countries have historically supported each other at multilateral forums and expressed optimism about further strengthening cooperation in diverse sectors, including healthcare, education, biotechnology, and trade.

He particularly highlighted Cuba’s globally recognized achievements in the field of medical sciences and underscored the potential for collaboration in public health initiatives.

Ambassador Cordero Torres thanked the President for the warm reception and reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to enhancing its engagement with Pakistan.

He expressed his country’s desire to deepen bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation that would benefit both nations. The ambassador-designate also conveyed greetings and goodwill from the Cuban leadership.

Pakistan and Cuba have enjoyed cordial relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties, with both countries maintaining cooperation at international platforms such as the United Nations.

Over the years, Cuba has extended support to Pakistan in healthcare, including the provision of medical expertise and training opportunities.
