29th Plenary Meeting between Japan & US

Tokyo/Washington, 18 October 2021 (TDI): The 29th Plenary Meeting of the Japan-United States Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) convened on 18th October. It was a virtual event.

Kato Ryozo and Dr. Sheila A. Smith co-chaired it. Kato Ryozo is Japan’s CULCON Chair and former Ambassador of Japan to the United States. Panelists representing different fields of both countries such as government, business, and academia, attended the meeting.

The meeting was inaugurated by congratulatory messages from the Japanese Prime Minister, Kishida Fumio, and the US President, Joseph R. Biden. The significance of people-to-people exchange between US and Japan was underscored for strong ties.

The agenda of the meeting was to deliberate upon an array of topics. From the impact of the COVID-19 on Japan-U.S. exchanges, global roles that Japan and the U.S. play in response to the pandemic to the multilayered diplomatic relations between the two.

CULCON was formed in 1961 by Prime Minister Ikeda and President Kennedy. Tokyo, held the first-ever meeting of CULCON, in 1962. Ever since, conferences have convened regularly.
